Respuesta del cultivo de sandía (Citrullus vulgaris Schrad) al potencial del agua en el suelo

Se estudió el efecto de los niveles 20, 40 y 60 centibares (cb) de potencial hídrico del agua en el suelo (ψ) al momento del riego, en tres etapas fenológicas: vegetativa (V), floración (FL) y fructificación (FR), sobre el rendimiento del cultivo de sandía (Citrullus vulgaris Schrad) en la Chontalpa, Tabasco, durante el ciclo primavera verano de 1998. El experimento se estableció en campo empleando un diseño experimental San Cristóbal, alojado en un diseño de bloques completos al azar. Se evaluó diámetro de fruto, longitud de fruto, peso de fruto, número de frutos (NF) y rendimiento (R) en los diferentes tratamientos. Se encontraron diferencias estadísticas significativas entre tratamientos en las variables NF y R, y se evidenció que el valor de ψ al momento del riego tiene un efecto preponderante sobre dichas variables. Durante la etapa FL el cultivo fue más sensible al déficit hídrico, y el valor de ψ durante esta etapa es importante en la formación de frutos. El modelo de regresión que relaciona a R con los valores de ψ al momento del riego en las etapas V, FL y FR, predice un R máximo absoluto para el rango de exploración estudiado para ψ; además el modelo indica que durante las etapas V, FL y FR, los riegos deberán aplicarse al cultivo cuando ψ se encuentre a 40.7, 33.8 y 41.2 cb, respectivamente, para obtener el máximo rendimiento en el cultivo.

The effect of 20, 40 and 60 centibars (cb) of soil water potential (ψ) at irrigation moment, in three phenologyc stages: vegetative (V), flowering (FL) and fruiting (FR) over the yield of watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris Schrad) was studied in Chontalpa, Tabasco, during the spring Summer cycle of 1998. The research was established in an experimental field using the San Cristóbal experimental design, nested in a completely blocks randomized design. The characters evaluated were: Fruit diameter, length and weight, number of fruits (NF) and yield (R), in the different treatments. There were statistical significant differences among treatments for the variables NF and R, and it was shown that ψ at irrigation had a notorious effect on these variables. These results indicate that during the FL stage this crop is more sensitive to soil water deficit, and that the ψ during this stage is important in defining the magnitud of NF and R. A regression model was determined to relate R with ψ at irrigation, in stages V, FL and FR, which predicts an absolute maximum value within the exploration range studied for ψ. According to the model, during stages V, FL and FR, the crop should be irrigated when ψ reaches values of 40.7, 33.8, and 41.2 cb, in order to obtain maximum fruit yield.
