El ocaso de los lonkos y el caos social en el Gulumapu (Araucanía), 1880-1925

En este artículo se hace un análisis de la violencia inter-étnica que afectó a los mapuches durante el período posterior de la así llamada ‘Pacificación de la Araucanía’, a causa del debilitamiento de las autoridades tradicionales -lonkos y toquis- y la incapacidad del Estado chileno de instalar su institucionalidad jurídica de un modo eficiente y homogéneo a través del Gulumapu. Se examinan los registros judiciales del período y se reconstruyen aquellos casos más demostrativos de la violencia que generó el vacío de poder. Concluye con los testimonios de Manuel Aburto Panguilef, Pascual Coña y Martín Painemal que describen la decadencia que experimentaron las autoridades tradicionales desde comienzos del siglo XX.

This article deals with the eruption of Interethnic and inter personal violence amogst the Mapuche during the period that followed the so called ‘Pacificación de la Araucanía’. It postulates that this phenomena was due largely to the weakening of traditional authorities -lonkos and toquis- and the inability of the Chilean State to set up its juridic institutionality in an efficient and homogenous way. Judicial records are reviewed and some cases are examined in detail to demonstrate that violence amongst the Mapuche during this period was strongly linked to the vacuum of power created by the incorporation of tribal territories to the jurisdiction of the Chilean State. It concludes with the testimonies of Pascual Coña, Manuel Aburto Panguilef and Martin Painemal, whom described the decline of traditional authorities during the first decades of the XXth century.
