Michel Foucault: ética de la palabra y vida académica

Michel Foucault nos legó, de manera implícita, una reflexión sobre el sentido de la labor del “maestro de vida” tal como la filosofía antigua (greco-latina) la practicó e hizo problema de ella. En los estudios de Foucault sobre la filosofía antigua, que recién estarán disponibles en su conjunto en edición escrita, esa figura del “maestro de vida” puede ser destacada si se le contrasta con la figura del “maestro de verdad” tal como la estudió Marcel Detienne especialmente referida a la época arcaica. En la introducción de este trabajo presentamos el marco general en el que Foucault inscribió sus indagaciones en la filosofía antigua. Luego, en la primera parte se resume lo que consideramos la contribución fundamental de Michel Foucault, destacando qué quiere decir una “ética de la palabra” y cómo el “maestro de vida” es portadora de ella. Al efecto nos apoyamos especialmente en el riguroso análisis que hizo Foucault de la nocción de parresía. A partir de allí postulamos, en la segunda parte del trabajo, que el sentido del papel ético que cumple la problematización que hace la filosofía antigua en relación con la figura del “maestro de vida” no sólo se cumple en su limitada dimensión histórica, vale decir: para la época de la filosofía antigua. También ese sentido nos permite interrogarnos críticamente sobre nuestra propia condición de educadores universitarios de este presente que vivimos en la apertura del siglo XXI. Al efecto, pretendemos mostrar que la auténtica vida académica exige de suyo aquella ética de la palabra

Michel Foucault left us with an implicit reflection about the meaning of the work of the “master of life,” just as antique philosophy (Greco-Roman) practiced and made a problem of it. In Foucault’s studies about ancient philosophy, which will soon be available as a whole in a written edition, this figure of the “master of life” could be emphasized if it were contrasted with the figure of the “master of truth” as Marcel Detienne studied it, especially referring to the archaic age. The introduction to this work presents the general framework within which Foucault performed his research on ancient philosophy. The first part summarizes what is considered Michel Foucault’s fundamental contribution, emphasizing what “ethics of the word” mean and how a “master of life” possesses this. For this purpose, the study is supported especially by the rigorous analysis Foucault made of the notion of parrhesia. Based on this, the second part of the study postulates that the meaning of the ethical role fulfilled by the problematization made by ancient philosophy related to the figure of the “master of life,” is fulfilled not only in its limited historical dimension, that is to say, in the age of antique philosophy. That meaning also allows us to ask ourselves critically about our own condition as university educators in the world we live in at the beginnings of the XXIst century. For this reason, this paper’s intention is to demonstrate that authentic academic life demands the ethic of the word
