Factores asociados al consumo de cigarrillo en adultos del suroccidente de Barranquilla (Colombia)

Objetivo: Determinar los factores asociados a consumo de cigarrillo en adultos del suroccidente de Barranquilla. Métodos: Estudio analítico (145 casos y 290 controles). Personas identificadas de la base de datos del estudio de «Enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles del suroccidente de Barranquilla». La tabulación se realizó en epiinfo 6.04, con salidas a Microsoft Word y Microsoft Excel. Resultados: 44.1% de los fumadores comenzaron a hacerlo por curiosidad. El promedio de edad de inicio fue de 17.1 años. El promedio de cigarrillos fumados por día fue de 6. Se encontró asociación entre fumar y ser hombre (OR 2.39; IC95%: 1.56 – 3.69), bajo nivel de escolaridad (OR 1.93; IC95%: 1.26 – 2.97), estar laborando (OR 2.17; IC95%: 1.41 – 3.35), tener miembros en la familia fumadores (OR: 2.7, IC95%: 1.4 – 5.3), influencia de los medios de comunicación (OR: 0.91; IC95%: 2.97 – 12.48), no pertenecer a una religión (OR: 1.62, IC95%: 1.06 – 2.49), consumir café con frecuencia (OR: 2.05, IC95%: 1.28 – 3.29), consumir alcohol (OR: 2.7, IC95%: 1.22 – 6.19) y tener disfuncionalidad familiar (OR: 2.3, IC95%: 1.17 – 4.5). Conclusiones: Los fumadores están expuestos a variables sociodemográficas, inherentes a su ser, y del medio ambiente. Es necesario intervenir sobre los factores de riesgo modificables para disminuir el consumo de cigarrillo.
