¿Comes carne de armadillo? Acerca del problema de la identidad de los matsiguenka del bajo Urubamba en el Oriente peruano

El artículo trata preguntas acerca de la identidad de los indígenas matsiguenka que habitan en el bajo Urubamba de Perú. Muestra que las cuestiones de la identidad indígena deben entenderse como expresión de estructuras que condicionan las relaciones de los diferentes grupos poblacionales de Perú. Estas se agudizaron enormemente a causa de la migración interna y recientemente, en forma importante, por motivo de la explotación de petróleo en la región camisea-Kashiriari. Entre tanto el proyecto de la explotación petrolífera ha sido realizado, los matsiguenka han modificado sus valores y sistema de normas —que antes eran coherentes y transparentes— para asegurar su supervivencia en las regiones donde habitan, sin embargo su situación es precaria.

The article is about some aspects of Matsiguenka social and cultural identity, i.e. the identity of an ethnic group that inhabits parts of the lower Urubamba river, Southeastern Peru. The text demonstrates the problems of indigenous identity are best understood as manifestations of very effective underlying structures that determine the relationships between the different segments of Peruvian population.The problems of Matsiguenka identity were aggravated by Peruvian colonisation of the lowland regions by serrano-migrants, and, very recently, by the project (and now realization) of the exploitation of natural gas deposits in the Camisea-Kashiriari región.The Matsiguenka have heavily modified their earlier coherent traditional value and norm system in order to enhance the survival chances in the territories inherited from their ancestors.
