Los signos del merengue: Un análisis semiótico

El presente artículo analiza desde una perspectiva semiótica el fenómeno del merengue entendido como el resultado de un proceso de mestizaje cultural que se produce en América en el ámbito de la música y como el resultado de distintos sistemas semióticos. Por sus características debe ser estudiado a partir de la intersemiótica y de la traducción cultural. Para comprender su dimensión sintáctica, semántica y pragmática es necesario un análisis que desglose las partes componentes: la lengua, la música, el baile, así como el ritmo, los pasos, los gestos y la puesta en escena. La suma de todos permite comprender la base de la significación que coloca al baile como un sistema semiótico complejo capaz de conservar y transmitir la memoria colectiva de los pueblos, además de generar nuevos procesos de comunicación cuya fin último es la identidad.

The following article analyzes the phenomenon of Meringue from a semiotic perspective. Meringue is understood as the result of a process of cultural mixing that is produced in America in the music world. Meringue is also the result of distinct semiotic systems. Due to its characteristics, Meringue should be approached through inter-semiotic and cultural translation perspectives. In order to comprehend its syntactic, semantic and pragmatic dimensions, an analysis is necessary that would break-down the component parts: the language, the music and dance, as well as the rhythm, the steps, the gestures and the scenario. This summing of the aforementioned components allows a comprehension of the basis for meaning that places the dance within a complex semiotic system, capable of conserving and transmitting the collective memory of the people as well as generating new processes of communication, the ultimate purpose of which is identity.
