English abstract
The concepts symbolic and imaginary are useful to analyze in cultural terms the tension between the instituted and that which institutes that cuts through the social from side to side. In the article the sense of the symbolic is precised starting from the tructuralist tradition, reaching at the way to the imaginary from the hand of authors that have felt the necessity to give free rein to this paradigm. However, a serious bet toward the imaginary demands an abandonment of the scope of science, in this case sociology, and entering the one of art. But not any type of art. Chinese art gives the impression of being more capable than western art in dealing with the imaginal power of the social.
