Within a conjugal relationship, who is more violent: men or women? Different responses to this question arise in scientific debate on marital violence, as a result of different theoretical approaches, the use of different methodologies and differing target populations. There is a clear need to distinguish the types of violence involved and the contexts in which it occurs, and to analyse it beyond the physical aspect.

Keywords: conjugal violence; gender; symmetry/asymmetry; methodologies.
