CONTENIDO DE AGUA EN EL GRANO Y CAPACIDAD POTENCIAL DE DEMANDA EN HÍBRIDOS DE MAÍZ PARA VALLES ALTOS

En maíz (Zea mays L.) la capacidad potencial de demanda (CPD) a nivel de cultivo puede estimarse con el producto entre el número de granos por unidad de superficie (NG) y el contenido máximo de agua en el grano (CMAG). La CPD también se puede utilizar para estudiar el papel de algunos factores de crecimiento sobre el rendimiento de grano en función de cambios en el NG y en el peso individual de grano (PG). En el presente estudio se midió el contenido de agua en el grano y la CPD en tres híbridos comerciales de Valles Altos ('Cóndor', 'H-48' y 'H-50') en función de dos fechas de siembra (normal: 11/04/08, y tardía: 29/04/08), dos dosis de fertilización nitrogenada (30 y 180 kg N ha-1) y dos densidades de población (6.25 y 9.25 plantas m-2), durante el ciclo Primavera-Verano 2008 en el valle de Toluca, México. En los tres híbridos aumentó el NG al incrementar la dosis de N y la densidad de población, en las dos fechas de siembra. La variación en el NG fue de ca. 1500 a 2500 granos m-2, lo que refleja una amplia variación en las condiciones de crecimiento que hubo durante la floración y el periodo de llenado de grano. La duración del periodo de llenado de grano no se afectó sensiblemente al retrasar la FS o aumentar la dosis de N; sin embargo, la mayor dosis de N incrementó (P ¿ 0.05) la tasa de llenado de grano, así como el CMAG y el PG. El rendimiento de grano de los tres híbridos estuvo estrechamente asociado con la CPD. Estos resultados resaltan la importancia del papel determinístico de un alto valor de la CPD para incrementar el potencial de rendimiento de grano en los híbridos de maíz de Valles Altos de México.

In maize (Zea mays L.) potential sink capacity (PSC) at crop level can be estimated as the product of kernel number per unit area (KN) and maximum kernel water content (MKWC). PSC can be used to study the role of some growth factors on grain yield in response to changes in KN and individual kernel weight (KW). In this study we measured kernel water content and PSC in three commercial highland maize hybrids ('Condor', 'H-48' and 'H-50') in two sowing dates (normal: 11/04/08, and late: 29/04/08), two nitrogen rates (30 and 180 kg ha-1) and two population densities (6.25 and 9.25 plants m-2), during the Spring-Summer season of 2008 in Toluca Valley, México. All maize hybrids showed an increase in KN when N concentration and population density were increased in the two sowing dates. KN varied from 1500 to 2500 grains m-2 thus reflecting the wide variation in growing conditions occurring during flowering and grain filling periods. The duration of the grain filling period was not affected by delaying the sowing date or decreasing the concentration of N; however, the highest N concen-tration induced a gain (P < 0.05) in grain filling rate, which reflected in higher values of MKWC and KW. Grain yield of these hybrids was strongly associated with PSC established during the flowering period and start of the grain filling period. These results highlight the importance of the deterministic role of a high PSC value to increase grain yield potential of Mexican highlands maize hybrids.
