DIVERSIDAD FENOTÍPICA DE MAÍCES NATIVOS DEL ALTIPLANO CENTRO-ORIENTE DEL ESTADO DE PUEBLA, MÉXICO

En México, el Estado de Puebla ocupa el noveno lugar en producción de maíz (Zea mays L.) y 41 % de ésta proviene del Distrito de Desarrollo Rural de Libres en el cual se cultivan preponderantemente poblaciones nativas. En la presente investigación se evaluó el grado de diversidad fenotípica de los maíces nativos existentes en este Distrito, así como las relaciones fenéticas que éstos presentan con las razas reportadas para los Valles Altos de México. En los años 2006 y 2007 se colectaron 134 poblaciones nativas provenientes de 22 localidades de la región, que se evaluaron en 2007 en tres localidades, junto con seis testigos que representaron a las razas Palomero Toluqueño, Cónico Norteño, Cónico y Chalqueño (con sus variantes Crema y Palomo). Se registraron 22 variables (fenológicas, de espiga, mazorca y grano). Los análisis de varianza, de conglomerados y de componentes principales evidenciaron la presencia de una amplia diversidad fenotípica entre poblaciones de maíz, la cual se manifestó como un continuo de variación en atributos como días a 50 % de floración femenina, altura de planta y de mazorca, longitud de la rama central de la espiga, diámetro de mazorca, número de hileras y longitud de grano. Se detectó cierta similitud de las poblaciones nativas con la raza Chalqueño y su variante Chalqueño Crema, pero no con los demás testigos raciales. Esto sugiere que una fracción de las poblaciones nativas está diferenciándose morfológicamente de las razas reportadas para la región. También se observó que la selección que los agricultores están imponiendo sobre características como precocidad, porte de planta y componentes del rendimiento del grano, está conduciendo al desarrollo de distintos grupos de poblaciones.

In México, the State of Puebla is on the ninth place in maize production; 41 % comes from the District for Rural Development 'Libres', where maize landraces are the main varieties sown. The present study was conducted with the purpose of assessing the level of phenotypic diversity present in the maize landraces cultivated in that District, and studying the phenetic relationships among such materials and the races reported for the Highlands of México. A total of 134 landraces from 22 communities of the District were collected in the years 2006 and 2007, and were evaluated in 2007 at three sites, along with six controls representing the races Palomero Toluqueño, Conico Norteño, Cónico and Chalqueño (with its variants Crema and Palomo). Twenty-two traits were measured (phenological, of the tassel, ear and grain). The analyses of variance, clusters and principal components indicated the presence of a considerable phenotypic diversity among maize populations, which was expressed as a continuous of variation in attributes such as days to 50 % silking, plant and ear height, length of the central branch of the tassel, ear diameter, row number and grain length. Certain similarity was detected among native populations and the Chalqueño race and its variant Chalqueño Crema, but none with the other racial controls. These findings suggest that a fraction of the native populations is departing morphologically from the races reported for the region. It was also observed that the selection that farmers are imposing on traits such as precocity, plant height and yield components is resulting in the development of distinct groups of populations.
