Diversidad morfológica de poblaciones nativas de frijol común y frijol ayocote del oriente del Estado de México

México es centro de origen, domesticación y diversificación del frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) y frijol ayocote (P. coccineus L.). Ambas especies, junto con el maíz (Zea mays L.), han sido importantes desde la época prehispánica por su valor alimenticio. Actualmente parte de la diversidad fenotípica y genética de estos cultivos se conserva en las poblaciones nativas cultivadas por los agricultores. La necesidad de generar estrategias que optimicen la conservación in situ y reducir la aparente erosión genética de las dos especies en el oriente del Estado de México y tres localidades aledañas del Estado de Morelos motivaron la evaluación del estado actual de la diversidad morfológica contenida en poblaciones de P. coccineus y P. vulgaris de esta región. Se caracterizaron morfológicamente 107 poblaciones de frijol común, 42 de frijol ayocote y una de frijol acalete (P. coccineus ssp. darwinianus), mediante 11 variables cualitativas y 16 cuantitativas, en Tecamac, Edo. de México, en el año 2003. La variación entre poblaciones de frijol común fue mayor que la del frijol ayocote para color de flor y de semilla, y forma predominante de ápice de la vaina. Las poblaciones de frijol ayocote resultaron más diversas en el tamaño que en el color de la semilla (54.8 % morado, 26.2 % negro y 19.0 % blanco y café), y conformaron dos grupos definidos por precocidad, precoz y tardío, número de semillas por vaina y tamaño de semilla. Se determinó que todavía existe una gran diversidad de frijol común, más que de frijol ayocote, la cual se podría estar manteniendo por el intercambio de semilla en mercados regionales y por su utilización en los sistemas de asociación maíz-frijol.
